Luminescence under the boughs
Actually this is not strictly luminescence, but reflection of sunlight from suspended particles in the deep water of Weinfelder Maar in the West Eifel.
The Maar is a circular lake about 500m wide and 50m deep, although it was much deeper before it filled with sediment. It is a flooded volcanic explosion crater and the area is pocked with such craters some of which are flooded and some have filled in.
The Eifel region is northern Europe's most active volcanic area and is technically still alive. The last eruptions here were less than 9000 years ago and some were pretty big. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, and also the Maar Museum in Manderscheid if you are interested in the geology and paleontology of the region.
