Chinese lanterns
Always cheerful flowers these lanterns.
The real Chinese lantern plant (Physalis alkekengi) (also: Jews cherry) is a 25-120 cm tall perennial plant of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The name Jews cherry is derived from the shape of the fruit reminiscent of the medieval headdress of Jews.
The orange lantern is a fully-grown calyx.
The berry-shaped fruit is inside the orange shell. Although the flowers are toxic, are the non-toxic berry related species of Psysalis sometimes used for jams, beverages, and desserts.
In the Middle Ages, the ripe berries are pressed and fermented together with grapes. The resulting wine was drunk as a remedy for gout and bladder and kidney disorders.
In old paintings, the plant is often used to create an autumn mood.
And that did me remember when I saw it hanging against an old brick wall.
