The Tomb Of Sir John de Graeme

The town of Falkirk is said to be named after the "Faw Kirk" - Scots for "Speckled Church". Initially built around the 7th Century, the church has over the years been rebuilt many times. Its current incarnation is as the Falkirk Old and St Modan's Parish Church, in the centre of the town.

In pride of place in its graveyard is the resting place of Sir John de Graeme. According to the plaque beside the grave, Sir John was William Wallace's right-hand man, and he died during the Battle of Falkirk (22-Jul-1298). The tombstone you can see here is a replica of the original, and the wrought iron sword was added to his tomb by Victorian admirers.
