Calanais Standing Stones
No apologies for another standing stone blip, they are one of my favourite things to track down. Both the history and the mystery surrounding them fascinate me, even if we will never find out the true reasons for them being raised. I like to think that they are for following the patterns of the sun and moon. We visited three of the sets around Calanais this morning, when we got a break in the rain.
We did find a Dun around 2000 years old which we had a clamber around and had another couple of really soggy walks. My boots have a nice coating of mud on them now!
Also visited some blackhouses, which is where crofters lived up until as recently as 30-40 years ago. Lovely little cottages, but can imagine them being very cold during the winter months, as its particularly cold now!
Rain looks like its going to hold off another couple of days for us, so fingers crossed...
