After The Gold Rush
We had a really nice day today. BB and I joined the extended family Blogs on a pilgrimage back to his birthplace. a very lonely and isolated cottage in the wilds of the Scottish Borders.
Lots of fun with picnics, naked waterfall plunging and general shenanigans in the countryside.
On the way, I met John the Treasure Hunter - panning for gold in the hills.
Scotland has had a long history of gold mining and panning around the Leadhills, so called because the hills were full of lead ore and usually where you get ore you also get gold. There's not a lot of it left but just enough to keep enthusiasts like him coming out hoping to strike 'The Mother Lode'
He let me see today's find about 1/10 of a gram around £2.00 worth. Not enough to cover the cost of the fuel to get him there but just enough to keep him coming back.
Fascinating stuff.
