Lakeland Cottage

Joyce and I decided on a drive down to the Langdale area today which we set out on at about 11.00 despite it being very rainy. It rains a lot in the Lakes so I figured any images of rainy scenes would just be typical of the district!

Oh boy - some of the roads we travelled were barely more than a car's width wide. Combine the narrow roads with the pot-holes, ragged roads and rain and some of the journey was very interesting.

We had lunch in Grassmere and by the time we'd finished the cloud and mist had lifted so we decided to drive back so that I could at least see the Langdale Pikes which, up to this point, had been shrouded in mist and low cloud.

At one point I hopped out to take some pics and Joyce had pulled over to the left in a small area where the road was a little wider and put the hazards on. As I returned to the car another vehicle pulled up behind her and a young-ish man hopped out and went to talk to her . . . . . . I got a bit worried that he was getting annoyed at how we'd parked and was about to leap to Joyce's defence when he turned and moved back to his car. It turned out he'd passed Joyce pulled in to the side with the hazards on and turned around and come back to check everything was alright. Nice man - very nice man :) How great to know complete strangers can and do still show care and compassion for others.

This cottage was one of the many that we passed - typical for the area, built of local stone, beautiful gardens and lots of lush greenery (probably attributable to the huge amounts of rain!) And this area was home to William Wordsworth and other Lakes poets - and with the scenery and surroundings I've seen today I can understand why they were moved to write such romantic poetry. It really is a beautiful part of the country.
