Just Opened
The Carlton Hotel opened it's door at 4:0pm today and it did great a big welcome from the earth at 4:23pm with a good shake.. 4.1 earthquake.
The Carlton Hotel stood for 150 years on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Papanui Road. The area is widely known as Carlton Corner. The Carlton Hotel was the home of New Zealand’s first tap beer and it also sported the first beer garden in the country. It was demolished following the 22 February 2011 earthquake.
The name ‘Carlton’ originated in a Tory gentlemen’s club founded by the Duke of Wellington in London, in 1831. At one stage the club was located at Lord Kensington’s house at Carlton Gardens. For More Info on the Calton.
I was just starting to put up this shot when the earthquake struck and it was a good shake up stairs here! This afternoon I said to John that the sky today was just like the one on February 22, 2011 and we could be in for a shake.. ! We were to have a lovely warm sunny day but instead it has been overcast and cold. Then just after 4pm the sun resided to come out.
Here is a shot I took on Feb 22, 2011 about a hour after the devastating earthquake that hit our city.
Here is a shot before it was started
