The Peloton
Stage 6 of the Tour of Britain was through Devon. From Sidmouth, through Exeter and then up to Haytor.
Decided that the best spectating option was at the top of Mamhead, above Starcross. Hopefully they would be going slowly enough to actually see something.
Got a lift from a friend and we arrived a bit later than planned after navigating round various road closures.
After 10 minutes waiting, listening to the helicopter getting closer and closer, the lead group shot by. Like everyone else I was using a long lens and got a few rubbish shots. Decided to put the lens to wide angle and hold the camera on the floor for the rest, just to be different and it seems to have worked out quite well - though did almost get run down as the peloton widened out across the road!
30 seconds and they were all gone. A few more cheers for the stragglers and it was all over. Spectating at it's most efficient... To be honest it strikes me that cycling, like sailing, is one of those sports best watched on TV if you actually want to know what's going on.
