Victoria Tower
Victoria Tower is part of thef Municipal Buildings in Greenock, the seat of Inverclyde Council. The buildings were constructed largely between 1881 and 1886 in an Italian style, and to a scale then unseen in the rest of Scotland of its time.
The building is famously has a corner missing. This is called "Cowan's Corner" after the landowner of the time who refused to sell his plot for the redevelopment of the new town hall complex. The missing corner has never been fixed despite a bomb destroying the shop that sat there in 1941 and although it was always assumed that the Municipal Buildings would eventually be completed it has never come to fruition, there have been several face lifts with seating and gardens over the years but never any plans to completed the corner.
This is in many ways the Jewel in the Crown if Greenock's Victorian Architecture however churches, the custom house and the sheriff court all display beautiful ornate design if only people take the time to look.
This view is taken looking North to the river, you can just see through the hanging mist the Clydeport Cranes at the ocean terminal.
I hope you like the little glimpse of the tower again albeit yesterday was from a distance and a view not oft seen, best viewed in large I think
