Today we went on a day trip to The Falkirk Wheel. It's a fair drive from Aberdeen, 2 hours each way, but it was worth it. What an amazing piece of engineering. In short it's a boat lift that is 35m high and has replaced the need for a series of 11 lock's in order to join 2 canals together on different levels.

So one boat goes in the bottom and the big arm turns, keeping the boat the same way up (as in you don't go upside down!) and in 4 minutes it's at the top loch. Amazing enough, but it only uses the electricity that it would take to boil 8 kettles. Which doesn't seem much for the weight of this thing!

At the top you go on a short canal ride and then come back towards the wheel where this was taken from. The views were amazing. Though this looks like if the boat had gone a little too far we'd have dropped off the end!
