If Dead Trees Could Talk
was the name of this evening's walk at the Richard and Donna O'Neill Conservancy which is part of the Rancho Mission Viejo Reserve.
Dead trees and portions of trees that are dead are important habitat to cavity dwelling birds like woodpeckers, bluebirds, and owls. There are also many insects, fungus, and other creatures dependent on these trees.
The larger hole was most likely a woodpecker nest.
