John Livingston's Tomb, Greenhill

John Livingston's Tomb just off Chamberlain Road. According to the plaque in the small walled courtyard, he owned the substantial Greenhill Estate in the 1630's. He was an Apothecary for 9 years, which resulted in him succumbing to the Black Death in 1645.

The walls were restored by Edinburgh District Council in 1984, after it was discovered no one owned the land on which the tomb and forecourt lay. IT was upgraded again between 1994 and 1999.

You will also notice the skull and crossbones, a common sign for death in the late 16th and early 17th Century. This was the inspiration for the Jolly Roger used by Pirates in the 17th and 18th Century.
