Kittiwakes on Stronsay
I went on an RSPB outing to Sanday today. Because the ferry was scheduled to take longer than usual, and because of the forecast, we only had a carful- five people, but we enjoyed the day, in spite of the dreich weather. I photographed these kittiwakes when the boat stopped at Stronsay.
We didn't see any particularly unusual migrants. The first stop was to look for a laughing gull from North America which has being hanging around and chortling for several days. No luck (no laughing gull matter). We did watch very nice flocks of 86 grey plover, 230 of bar-tailed godwit and, while watching those- a short-eared owl flew directly toward our parked car and swooped within wing-reach of the car roof. Other birds included 1 peregrine, 1 hen-harrier, 2 merlins, etc.
