A year in Canada

Day 35 – The Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, NS

Our ferry arrived nice and early at about 7am and we headed straight towards Cape Breton Island to the famous Cabot Trail. Many guide books rate the Cabot Trail as one of the top 5 things to do in Canada, and one of the best drives in the World. After such amazing scenery in Newfoundland we weren’t sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised!

The drive is amazing in a large part for the changes in terrain and scenery. A large section of the drive is coastal, and then a couple of parts in the mountains/hills which offer impressive vistas and exciting roads. It was nice to be driving for the fun and experience of it, rather than driving on a highway to get from A to B (like we have done for the past two days).

Our stop for the night was Cheticamp, a French speaking part of the area called Arcadia. The French owned the Cape Breton region until the British finally saw them off, after many previous piece-meal treaties, in 1763.

This photo was taken just north of Cheticamp.
