This is a statue to Aneurin Bevan, the politician who pushed through the establishment of the National Health Service.
For all it's faults, the NHS is a magnificent organisation that has made a huge difference to the life of people in the UK. Without it, many people would be lot worse off.
My mother remembered my grandmother looking in her purse, checking she had 3s 6d to pay the doctor, before she called him. My aunt was very ill with Scarlet Fever and my grandmother also worried what would she do if the medicine was expensive.
Now, people complain if they have to wait to see a doctor for free, before picking up their cheap, or free, drugs and can be rude and aggressive to the staff who are trying to help them.
