Hornet

Evil looking thing isn't it. Got the shock of my life when I approached the 'Jam Trap' I had set for the wasp problem in the garden. My daughter Amy keeps taking the lid off to let them escape again. Grrr! As I went to put the lid on I saw this horrible insect inside and ran for my camera instead. This is a European Hornet and allegedly not aggressive. However, it was attacking the wasps in the jar with it quite viciously. I did get some shots of that but only its bottom was well in focus so good shots for dramatic effect but not much cop technically. Apparently they are carnivorus and eat honey bees. I took quite a few photos before it stopped attacking wasps/eating jam and started to buzz and show signs of moving. I fled in horror walked calmly back to the kitchen and shut the door. Before reaching for my LIDL Wasp killing spray I googled the hornet and found that it was endangered, so it lives to terrorise me another day.
