Spinning

Another week, another mill, this time Helmshore Textile Mills in the Rossendale valley. There are two mills here which prepared and wove wool and cotton from the late 18th century. I can't quite remember all the many different machines and processes, with evocative names like flock shakers, derby doublers and teasel raising gigs, but it was mighty interesting. It's also surprising that these seemingly ancient machines were in commercial operation as late as about 1970.
