Williamsburg Gaol
This is the view that one got when in jail awaiting trial. It is a small room that held perhaps 25-30 persons.
The jailer said that this would make a great photograph and he's right. I wouldn't want to be here if this was my view...my only view...until my case was resolved in one of two ways. After trial for a capital crime next door at the capitol, the possible result was either release or hanging. A gallows out back was used for the latter; there was no prison. A court down the street handled misdemeanors with minor punishments like the pillory or the stocks.
