Autumnal moths part 2
I have been running my moth trap every night ever hopeful of catching some of the more beautiful autumnal moths, and the other night I caught the first one!
I have decided however to bring you some of the more common, and less colourful autumn moths first.
Today's blip is a twofer, the black moth is a another Black rustic, the same as the one blipped on 23.9.13 but the other moth is a Lunar underwing Omphaloscelis lunosa.
The lunar underwing is common in the south and a very variable species, with the forewings ranging from pale buff to a deep dark brown, and some are even reddish in colour, the darker forms usually showing contrasting pale veins giving a somewhat 'netted' appearence. I get a good number of all colourations in my garden.
It has one generation a year, and flies between August and october, The larvae feed on various grasses.
I like catching these fetching little moths, and it is always fun seeing how many colourways you can get in one night'
