A Quiet Day
No gallivanting today- instead a day spent reading at home. I managed to finish the 1848 book this afternoon and then proceeded to the book of letters between Asquith (who was prime minister at the time) and a woman, Venetia Stanley, who was less than half his age. He was quite indiscreet in his letters, telling her of government plans, secret meetings during an Irish crisis and so on.
Such was the frequency of postal deliveries that Asquith could write a couple of letters per day and know that they would be delivered the next day. Also, Asquith's relaxation of a Friday afternoon was to go for a quiet drive round London- both very different from the current situation.
