Balinese legong dance
We went to a dinner with a Balinese legong dance show tonight.
Bali has a fascinating culture, it's the only island within the Indonesian archipelago which has kept its Hindu origins (and those Hindu origins have to do with two massive Indian imperiums which covered most of South East Asia). However Balinese Hinduism is very special and adapted to earlier local customs.
Balinese legong dance is very much like classical Indian dance and askes a great discipline of its dancers who will have been trained from very young onwards.
Every facial expression, every move of hands and body will have a special meaning. The music accompanying it is gamelan music, which can sound from soft and dreamy to very excited :-) You can find some examples here
Many of the dances relate to stories from the Mahabherata and Ramayana, the sacred stories in Hinduism. However the lady here was representing one of those conquering Indian kings who reigned all over South-East Asia and became king of Bali too.
