Where the Light Gets In

Genesis (not the band, silly!)

I've just come back from the Sebastiao Salgado exhibition at the European House for Photography (Maison Européenne de la Photographie) and was amazed.

The exhibition is called "Genesis" and shows more than 250 photos of the remotest parts of the world, their flora, fauna, and, where there are humans living in these inhuman conditions, their population. Of course the subject matter is compelling, but seen by Salgado it becomes something more. I went from awe to sadness to joy and pure laughter when I discovered a trick.

I didn't know Salgado well, and what I knew or thought I knew didn't really appeal to me. If I remember well, what I had seen had too much of an urban feeling to touch me - though now I would certainly be touched by that, too! Still, I had the opportunity to go and see actual pictures by someone who has such a reputation and couldn't pass. I'm happy I remained curious despite my negative ideas about his work. This was, in the true sense of the words, awe-inspiring.

I just had to buy the exhibition's catalogue - and to blip it, as this is the high point of my day! :-)

(I also posted a My Sleeping Beauty pic for yesterday - don't expect the series to start again, this is a one-shot thing. There might be others in the future, but this is completely unpredictable in the current circumstances...)
