Well this was unexpected
Well!
We weren't expecting to see this again, but we did.
And so begins our saga of getting home.
Arriving early to the airport (1700) for a flight home we were told that our flight was delayed till 2200 as the aircraft was late running due to IT issues in Heathrow. Fine we could deal with that.
Boarded and ready to leave at 2200 we spent more time at the gate than expected. Taxied and such to the runway. This seemed to take ages, but not having a window I didn't know what was going on.
You know something bad is happening when the captain comes over the tannoy at this stage. So, we drew back to the gate for investigations. We were told that an actuator on engine 4 had failed. Something that's rare to occur and indeed no parts existed at Vancouver airport. Nor at Boeing's factory in Seattle. A new part needed to be shipped from London!
So, flight home was cancelled forthwith and the chaos of us being re-homed ensued. The other frustrating thing that we were told was that we'd need to go back through Immigration! - We’d not even left the ground, but still had to get our passports stamped for the extra time we were in the country.
Once this queue was finished we then had to wait for our bags, then queue again at a BA desk to find out where they were sending us.
In our case we were sent to the Coast Hotel on Comox Street near English bay. A further taxi ride into the city and we got to the hotel for a further queue at check-in!
Sleep occurred at about 4am that morning with checkout from the hotel set at 1200 - no late checkout. I think we got 7 hours sleep before we had to move.
BA did however manage to communicate to us by email that our flight would re-attempt to fly at 1900 the next day, with check-in opening at 1430.
After a bit of lunch (on BA's dime) we went for a wee walk where we got to see these statues again. However, as it was running close to check-in we decided to make a beeline for the airport. Little did we know that when we got there 10 minutes after the posted opening time we'd be presented with this queue. Hence this frustrating tweet to BA's London Customer Service. Admittedly they did open more desks for check-in - but this was only after the queue lengthened. We spent 2.5 hours in this queue before getting out tickets and indeed connection flights sorted.
Did we leave on time - did we hell. I think we left at 2030.
This meant we hit Heathrow with less than an hour to get through border control and Heathrow's security checks. Much running was done to get to our gate on time. Which we did, but our bags didn't.
Further faffing at Edinburgh ensued as we had to report the bags as not appearing. They did however appear the next day from the back of a van.
