Grey Squirrel
Visited the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin today. We had a big surprise when we discovered that there was a full blown exhibition of sculpture and 3D work in progress both in the exhibition space and scattered throughout the gardens.
During our rambles we came across this grey squirrel in a spreading Irish Yew tree. I had to literally get inside the tree in order to grab this shot. The grey squirrels have almost eaten the native reds out of house and home in the Eastern part of the country having been introduced about 150 years ago. It is said that the original pair were a wedding present to a happy couple in the midlands but that when the bride opened the cage the critters escaped and were never seen again. Their descendants have done extraordinarily well though and have probably been halted in their march westward by the broad expanse of the river Shannon.
