Hala Lei Maker

Roy was creating hala lei outside Na Mea, a wonderful store full of local flavor.
He just made 90 years old in April. He was trained by his grandmother from whom he learned local lore as well. He says that a hala lei symbolizes a new beginning, a different stage of life. Colors are yellow, orange or red. After wearing, it dries into a wonderful keepsake. His lei are the most delicate and tightly strung that I have seen; the red colored one will be sent to my sister-in-law who is in need of a new beginning to her life.
