Wall

After hearing the news about mortars I noticed the patterns of the stones in this wall while out collecting tasty blackberries and ignoring the date!
Today it was announced that the concrete mortar which is usually used on buildings is not as effective as the lime based mortar that was always used until about 80 years ago. Lime mortar is flexible, can breathe and absorb CO2 and is able to cope with moisture more easily whereas cement mortar cracks and then starts to fall out and so necessitates repairs to the buildings which are expensive in the long term. This old roadside wall, made up of many kinds of the colourful sandstones found locally, has obviously been repaired with cement mortar but would not justify an expensive repair unlike a historical building. The patterns show the layers of sand deposited millions of years ago and the different minerals giving the rocks their different colours. Some of the sandstones have eroded badly and formed interesting shapes. In this area of a very varied geology there are many attractive boundary walls.

(I have just realised that this day last year I also did a sunlight and shadow effect.)
