Ruben's tube
Firstly thank you all so much for the comments, stars and faves you gave me for yesterday's blip! I really feel a part of this amazing 'community' and that is wonderful! Open evening at work today, and a chance to show our new physics equipment to the up and coming Year 6 ( and their parents). This piece of equipment is called a Ruben's tube after the German physicist who invented it in 1905. It is basically a long length of metal pipe, sealed at both ends, one attached to a frequency generator. Holes are perforated along the entire length at regular intervals and gas is fed into the tube, and lit down the entire length, to produce a standing wave. If you modulate music into the end of the tube attached to a frequency generator the flames act like a graphic equalizer and 'dance' in time with the beat, all very good fun, hot though!! I hope the parents will enjoy!!!
