Sardinian Warbler
We flew from London at the crack of dawn this morning Faro in Portugal to join our birding tour group. After a picnic lunch, we took a long walk around marshes and salt pans. Sardinian Warblers (Sylvia melanocephala) are common in the area, but they are extremely active and prefer to sulk in bushes. I've seen them elsewhere but never managed any sort of a decent shot. So this is a minor miracle.
I have just shown this image to our two leaders. They noted that it's likely a juvenile male, hatched earlier this year (a hint of brown in the wing, and only faint red in the eye ring--adults have conspicuously red eyes). Its short wing (ending just at the base of the tail) indicates that it does not migrate. And the bush is a pistachio plant--though I think not identical to that which grows pistachio nuts.
