Group outing Greenock Cut
We had planned to walk the Greenock Cut over the summer but never got everyone together. However today we were treated to a beautiful holiday Sunday. The clear sky's afforded lovely panoramic views over the Clyde.
Greenock Cut is an ancient monument and a central ingredient of Clyde Muirshiel Park. The walk passes by 23 beautiful stone bridges and two bothies that provided basic accommodation for the workers when Greenock Cut was built in the 19th century.
We started beside Loch Thom, and the Compensation reservoir. They were both built to supply water for the Greenock Cut aqueduct, which was designed by Robert Thom between 1825-27. It was built to supply water for industry and also brought clean drinking water to Greenock for the first time.
