If you go down to the woods today... blackened fingers claw the air, locked in tetanic spasm they point skyward as if attempting one final moribund plea for attention before succumbing to their subterranean fate...

No CSI is required however. These are Xylaria polymorpha or Dead Men's Fingers, a fungus that lives on rotten wood.
