Sadness

Now I know zoos do good work and are important in various breeding programs around the world but today reminded me why I never took my kids to the zoo on a regular basis. I was commissioned to shoot an awards ceremony in a conference centre that happened to be in a large zoo park. I took my daughters and they wandered around the park with my wife while I did the work.

During a break I ventured out to the Orang Utan compound and spent twenty minutes with this old wise one. He locked eyes with me for most of this time and I felt his sadness. He really doesn't belong here. Zoos may be a necessary evil but the animals don't know the greater purpose.
