IES La Poveda
It's another early morning for me. Today's destination was IES La Poveda in Campo Real. It's a secondary school just like my other instituto yesterday. When I arrived I didn't feel as welcomed compared to my other school. As I approached the campus, the gate for the parking lot had just opened so I decided to run through it because I didn't know where else I could enter. The professor who drove through explained to me (in Spanish) that I had to use the door on the left. I didn't quite understand so he repeated himself. I quickly introduced myself, but that didn't matter. I still had to go around.
I walked to the front gate, pressed the buzzer, and the secretary let me in. I told her I was the new language assistant for the school and she just said the teachers have not arrived yet so I could just wait in the teachers' lounge. I thought to myself, gosh, no warm welcome, no happy to have you here, no tour of the school, no real introduction.
Well the English teachers finally arrive and class was just about to begin. One of the English teachers took me to her class and all of a sudden I was in front of a bunch of loud 12 year olds. I told them a little about myself and the students then began asking questions about me. Their English level was very basic and I think they had a hard time understanding me. Nevertheless, some students were excited to use their limited English with me and I immediately identified who want participate in class.
The two other classes I attended went by about the same, but age groups varied and English ability shifted. Overall, I think the students are excited to have me at their school. This year is going to be interesting to say the least, but I'm ready to take on the challenges.
