Survival

I'm never quite sure what makes me pick one picture over another. I had one very nice one of cormorants sitting on a deserted dock with the sunset on the river and the sand dunes in the background but....oh well. There was a big restaurant built right on the river years ago and some of us wished it wasn't right there on the river because it blocked a good part of it off unless you were feeling affluent and could afford to eat there. (The food wasn't very good either)

Well, the restaurant did not survive and it has been closed down and, I imagine, up for sale for several years now. My daughter and I were climbing around the deserted area trying to get good pictures of the river, the sand dunes and the bridge when I spied this little plant growing through the pavement of the parking lot.

This is a Bridal Veil Lace plant which to all appearances seems to be a rather delicate flower and yet, it, with many other hardier plants, has broken through the pavement and grown into a very healthy, flowering bush! It makes me think that maybe our footprints on this earth may not be so permanent after all. This restaurant will eventually be sold and the parking lot will be "repaired" but someday when it is finally and forever vacant, the berry bushes will creep in and over, the bridal veil lace will return, the birds will make nests and bring other plants from other places to grow around and over and through it.

The restaurant was already there and I wished the owner no harm nor do I wish the next owner anything but success in his endeavor but it is nice for me to know that it does not take nature very long to reclaim its own after we have made our "mark" on this earth.
