A CAUTIONARY TALE
My contribution to National Poetry Day, on the theme of water.
Terry, merry, foolishly fuelled by Monster and cheap vodka,
not quite grown up, throws a blown-up dinosaur into the sea.
Spirits soaring, full of taurine mixed with caffeine,
his mate incapable, laughing on the beach as
the inflatable saurian with Terry aboard reaches the first wave.
Slowly, then quicker as the tide takes them,
feeling sicker and dizzily drunk,
lying low on his lilo, vaguely waving from the waves,
Terry on his T Rex passes rocks
where ancient wrecks of less buoyant craft lie sunk.
Later, on the decks of lifeboats, worried men
search for Terry who, now very sober and sorry,
aware of distant shouting,
doubting, whispers "I don't think they saw us"
as he and his tyrannosaurus, fates forever linked,
become extinct.
