Tiny Tadpole

Had a wee peek at the tadpools to see if there was any sign of maturity - there is quite a wide range.

Some are still very undeveloped, there are some with back legs but no front and one or two, like this, with both sets of legs but still a long tail. Oddly, there is no connection between size and development; some of the least mature are big and chunky, the one in my hand is a minute specimen.

With the season progressing and falling temperatures I wonder whether any of this year's crop will survive to adulthood.
