Wheatear, with a Ghost
We drove 90 minutes north from Tavira today, into the Alentejo area for an all-day tour through rolling hills and wide fields, more or less cultivated. We were primarily in search of little and great bustard, as well as imperial eagles. Frankly, it was disappointing-- only a couple of bustards barely glimpsed in far-off vegetation. And two eagles relatively just about as far off in the sky, very small in our scopes.
In contrast, we had dozens of these Northern Wheatears, mostly also not close, and these were also not exactly near. This individual is a first-year juvenile, told from the wing pattern. It is already migrating south from at least Scandinavia, and will most likely winter south of the Sahara. Not a wonderful perch; the ghost is on a bar behind.
(NB: The location I've picked on the map is very approximate.)
