Inspiration...

Today I had the pleasure of visiting Hazlewood School in Glasgow which is for pupils with sensory impairments - we're about to build a similar school for secondary age pupils in Falkirk and in the early ideas stage of the design process so looking to garner ideas from recently built exemplar schools like this one.

It really is a beautifully designed school, but it's not a concept we're looking for at this stage - its all the details that work, or don't work. Like this tactile wall that runs the length of the school and help the pupils, all of whom are visually impaired to varying degrees, get around the place. Not only that, but this section is all frontage for easy access storage of wheelchairs, hoists and other large equipment that is always a challenge to organise in a school such as this, and so prevents dangerously cluttered spaces. I could go on .. but it was a very well spent few hours for those that went. The architects are just raring to go .. lining up their fine-liners they are, waiting for the get go. Now we've just got to get a location agreed from our shortlist of two.
