Warmer inside than out!

Arrived at work today to find that the air-con in our building wasn't working! The morning went by relatively ok if warm but by the afternoon in had really got a bit uncomfortable. As we have no windows or natural light I begun to appreciate how much I am used to having the air-con on and wished I could just open a window to get some air in.

Luckily I had gone out on my lunch break so at least I got some fresh air then! I drove down to the Water of Leith Visitor Centre where I blipped this millstone. Here is what it says:

This millstone was found in the Water of Leith during a clean-up near Bonnington in 2003, it came from one of the many mills which used the river for power from the 12th Century until the mid 1900?s.

The stone is called a 'gritstone' and was used in the milling of soft grains such as oats and barley. Most originated in Derbyshire and Yorkshire but similar stones were produced locally at Hailes Quarry, west Longstone from 1750.

It bears the common 'dressing' of parallel grooves cut into the surface in tangential segments. These segments were cemented together and bound with an iron hoop. These markings have been adopted as the logo of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
