Precision work

Another grey - but dry - day that never promised the warmth of Crete in the Autumn. But it allowed us a visit to some wonderful Cretan churches in the hills amid some spectacular views and some very twisty roads. One of the sites we visited was Aptera. This was first a Cretan City state covering the Chania area which was then overtaken by the Romans who built some astonishing cisterns and bathhouses which survive until today. The site is located high above Souda Bay with a commanding view of the area. What caught my eye was the precision and mastery of the stonemasons who built the 3km plus defensive wall that surrounded the site. Such craftsmanship before the age of technology.
