A bit of a pickle..
Green Tomatoes.
Cleared the tomatoes from the polytunnel this morning. Three containers, green, nearly red, and chicken feed. Had over a kilo each of green, and red tomatoes. Add onions, apples, raisins, brown sugar, vinegar and water. A bag of spices, and simmer for most of the day. Result, nearly eight jars of pickle.
Yes, it's a lot of effort, de-stalk toms, peel and clean onions, stand over a hot stove, sterilise jars, but it's worth it. This is "real" pickle. It's thick, it's tangy, it's sweet, it's chunky.. Roll on Christmas, and the cheese board..
Doing the same tomorrow with the red toms, and later in the week with beetroot, red and golden. And pickled baby beets too.. Carrot chutney?..
Been occasionally drizzley, and mostly cloudy, but managed to get down to the beach for a stroll, after harvesting veg for dinner. Parsnips, carrot, brussels, broccoli, beetroot, and British Queen potatoes. I think we got our "5 a day" today!!
