Sea urchin - (Maori - kina) - Sea eggs

Kina is a sea urchin endemic to New Zealand. Latin name Evechinus chloroticus.

Often called sea eggs, it is generally the yellow roe that's eaten.

They are eaten in NZ, raw and cooked, though I've never tried them and have no desire to. These are the outer casings washed up at Makara on the West Coast of the North Island. When alive they have spines protruding from the little dimples.
