His daily walk
After a better night's sleep, I woke in plenty of time to go out hunting the sunrise, before heading back to the city for dental appointments (both of us).
A few days ago, I was thinking about why people collect things, and slightly flippantly suggested that it may have to do with either or both hunting. and gathering.
Over my life I have collected various things for varying lengths of time. I followed my father's example and collected postage stamps for many years. That obsession faded out when my children were getting bigger, and I was getting busier and more involved at work. Another way I became my father was to join committees and end up chairing them!
When I was a university student I was in a flat with a chap who was a fellow runner; even more recreational than I was. He had found a magazine called World Sports, which could only be obtained by getting a number of five shilling British Postal Notes and sending them to England. I did too, and got interested in Track and Field Statistics. This was a shorter collection, stopping when the first born arrived.
My running has been almost obsessive, and I have certainly had a running diary for nearly as long as I've been married which is a wonderfully long time. Currently I am collecting (or is it hunting) daily blips. I know that I hunt sunrises.
This is today's, a mere 25 seconds after the sun first appeared above the high point of Kawau Island. I kept taking pictures over the next two minutes (collecting) as the sun eventually filled the gap between the bottom of the cloud layer and the top of the island. (Anyone who wants to see that for comparison is welcome to visit my blipfolio.)
Together, S and I chose this because of the walker. I see him frequently. he walks on the sand. I run on the concrete path as it provides a level and firm surface which helps me avoid injury. Maybe he and I both collect our daily exercise and keep it safely. A means of telling age it is not yet winning.
