Down the rabbit hole

This 'specialist event' emergency vehicle was parked all day beside a hole in the ground.

By cunningly impersonating a newspaper reporter, I established that it was there as part of the support team for the people who were down the hole. The people who were down the hole were laying new extremely high-voltage cables as part of the - and this will come as no surprise to Edinburgers - tram project. The people down the hole were working underground for four hours at a time, in tunnels hundreds of metres long.

The people who were waiting at the top of the hole were paramedics, in case anything went wrong down the hole. One of the people at the top of the hole said, knowingly, that if anything went wrong down the hole, their medical expertise would be a bit redundant, because they would have to go down with "a brush and shovel".

Given the choice, I'd rather stay at the top of the hole.
