Mont Crevelt

Mont Crevelt stands on a small hill on the South side of St. Sampson's harbour. For over three hundred years there has been a fortification here protecting first the Braye du Valle and then the harbour. The Martello tower itself was built in 1778 and the adjoining fort was added in subsequent years.
In the 19th century when St Sampson's exported huge quantities of granite, a flag was flown from the tower to warn approaching ships that the harbour was full.
In 1899 the States of Guernsey bought the fort from the British government with the intension of turning it into a cholera hospital. This did not transpire however and instead they used it for storing water to wash the nearby quays.
Today it is the headquarters for the Northern Explorer Scout unit.
