Quince, conkers and medlars
Or a still life of old-fashioned fruits of the season ! Husband brought these back from the office yesterday, one of his colleagues has an orchard full of these, which need to be harvested this weekend and was asking whether I was interested in some of it. I had a Google and a browse and saw that quinces and medlars can be made into jellies.
Interestingly the medlars (mispels in Dutch) are very hard and have to ripen to the point of getting brown and overly soft, a process called bletting in English, before they can be used to make the medlar jelly. That's probably why in Dutch we have the proverb: "Zo rot als een mispel" = As rotten as a medlar, meaning really, really rotten ! :-) I think I'm just going to let these sit in the fruitbowl for a while for decorative purposes only !
