'Come on'......
'It's time to go, mum's already in the water and you know she won't wait all day'. Mr Sheldrake encouraging the four remaining ducklings to take the plunge!
This one just makes me smile with the different poses, the little hesitation and dad keeping a close eye on me as he patiently waits. It reminds me of mum's eager calls from the water as each little duckling found the courage to make the leap. The family proceeded to cruise the lake with the five little ducklings between mum and dad.
The Paradise Sheldrake are also known as paradise ducks and are often referred to as large, goose-like ducks as their bodies are larger than ducks. Widespread in open spaces throughout New Zealand, they are common and protected. Very noisy warning all other birds when intruders are around. They are endemic.
Scientific name: Tadorna variegate
