State floral emblem
The Australian state emblem of New South Wales is the Waratah. This is a hardy native flowering shrub and grows wild on the East Coast.
During dry periods it does not flower sometimes for two or three years.
Once in flower it is unmistakable when walking in the bush. While it is tempting to pick the flower, it is an offense with a heavy fine imposed.
