Glen Lochay

It has been quite a long day and a long walk. Glorious blue sky at the beginning of the day saw us up the slopes of Meall Glas (959m). The heavy clouds that rolled in later brought rain to the south but it completely missed us and by the evening it was brightening up again to give us broad rays of sunshine lighting our way back down the glen. The peak in the shot is the next one along on the chain "Beinn Challum".

Glen Lochay is a bald looking glen, devoid of trees for many years and over-grazed with sheep and deer (as is much of the Highlands). A new reforestation programme has started in the last few years, fencing off areas (with gates to provide access but keep the livestock out), planting up some of the slopes with native birch, rowan and oak trees. With a bit of luck they should grow up quite rapidly and the glen should start to regain some of its former beauty and biodiversity.
