The story of Robinson Crusoe was based on the life of Alexander Selkirk who was born in this village of Lower Largo in Fife Scotland.
Selkirk spent 4 years and 4 months in complete solitude on the Island of Juan Ferdnandez. 400 miles off the Coast of Chile.
He died in 1723
