Is that a bird?

So I was standing by this tree for sometime today in the forest (don't ask) when I suddenly realised that there was something in/on the tree. I swear it looks like a bird sort of moulded into the tree. Approximately 20 metres further up the tree is a bird house.
The bizarre thing is that this tree isn't even on a known trail; we hacked away at some vegetation last week to unearth the lost trail and now I'm very curious!
